The ADA Flanger is valued by many, as being the do all/be all, of Flangerdom. Many tasty, and profoundly warped cyclic, swirling sounds inhabit this five knobbed wonder. Melting metallic drums, swooshing space ships, detuning moans, and broad, moving harmonic waves, crest and fall in a seemingly endless sonic ebb and flow. From super phasing musical textures, to an outright sound effects generator, the ADA Flanger delivers.
Controls include: Manual, Range, Speed, and Enhance pots, plus an A/B switch that allows you to work with even, or odd harmonics.
The ADA also has an exceptionally effective triggering sensitivity function, called "Threshold". This allows you to highlight the effect on particular notes; and passages of your choice, simply by picking more forcefully. Then as you back off with a lighter touch, the effect diminishes. Good stuff! So did ADA leave any stone unturned in this design? Not that we're aware of. Simply put: this is the promised land of Flanging.
Here's info e-mailed to us re: the ADA Flanger Manual (courtesy of Chuck Will/Ron). "Pedal originally listed at $300. The ADA Flanger is a second generation electronic flanger capable of producing a broad range of sound coloration, dramatically enhancing the effect of any amplified musical instrument, voice or percussive instrument. The capabilities of the ADA Flanger are numerous & astounding. Effects such as rotating speakers, chilling vibrato, resonance modifications, intensified studio flanging and incredible filter matrices to name a few, suggest that experimentation will certainly find the sound you have been looking for.
The manual goes on to describe the controls as follows: MANUAL (first control) Sets the time delay & is disabled when the Range is turned fully clockwise. RANGE: Determines whether the time delay is a function of the Manual control or the Speed control, or a combination of both. SPEED: A continuously variable sweep that moves over the entire delay range, shifting the comb filter up and down the sound spectrum. ENHANCE: A variable gain feedback loop around the delay line which produces amplitude peaking and echo decay time variation of the input signals. EVEN/ODD HARMONICS (switch): Allows passband peaking at even or odd order harmonic relationships.
FOOTSWITCH: Engages or bypasses the electronics of the ADA Flanger. THRESHOLD: A noise-eliminating gate that removes noise when the input signal level is low. Full clockwise position minimizes this function. CONTROL: A voltage control input that remotely operates the Manual control with an externally applied voltage."
[ NOTE: Please...confirm electronic specs/details of effects, with a qualified technician before pluging anything into the footswitch jack of any pedal. Some effects are built very differently inside, than others. This reporter doesn't own a soldering iron, but can promise you this: any effect can be damaged, or ruined. The following paragraph is offered as entertainment; it may well be accurate, but verify this before you screw up a great pedal! TF ].
"The Control input accepts either the ADA Control Pedal, or a +3.75 to +11.25 volt controlled voltage source. In either case, the connection should be made with a 3-conductor stereo, 4 inch cable. When the 3-conductor plug is inserted into the Control input jack, the Manual knob is overridden."
